Operating System Support for
Next Generation Large Scale NVRAM

SSD and Beyond...

In recent years, semiconductor technology has rapidly advanced, particularly in the realm of nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM). This technology is set to revolutionize the traditional computing paradigm by offering significant improvements in performance and data retention capabilities. NVRAM technologies such as Flash memory provide access times that are orders of magnitude faster than traditional storage devices, while also preserving data without power. The emergence of next-generation NVRAM devices and newer applications of NVRAM, necessitates changes across all layers of the software stack to fully exploit their potential.

Recent trends in NVRAM technology include the integration of Compute Express Link (CXL) to enhance data center performance through high-speed CPU-to-device and CPU-to-memory connectivity, reducing latency and increasing bandwidth. Research is also focusing on Cache Coherent Memory Hierarchy (CMM-H), which ensures data consistency across multiple processing units with minimal overhead. Additionally, Processing-in-Memory (PIM) technology is being developed to integrate processing capabilities within memory modules, significantly improving performance and energy efficiency by minimizing data movement.

Current state of art software technology leaves much to be desired to effectively exploit the physical characteristics of next generation NVRAM. NVRAMOS 2024 aims to bring together experts from industry and academia to discuss these advancements, exchange visions, and share insights on NVRAM technology. The workshop will cover a range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • System Software, e.g. operating system and database, for Storage Class Memory
  • Application software for Storage Class Memory
  • System software issue for SSD
  • Hardware and controller issues for SSD
  • Emerging NVRAMs and their software technologies
  • Multicore and next generation NVRAMs

Official Language

The official language of NVRAMOS 2024 is Korean.
